Hello All

I have just joined the forum. I have returned to model boats after a 30 year absence and am currently building a model barge that is 26 inches long. The barge is based on a mobile marine models ABS lighter hull and will be powered by one of their T4 motors.

Had a stroke a few years ago and now cannot drive or operate any power tools so the barge has to transportable on a bus and also possible to make using only hand tools. For these reasons my preferred material is plastic sheet (Easy to cut and light to carry the finished model). Because the barge will require a fair bit of weight as ballast I am working on a system that pumps water into 4 model aircraft 'clunk tanks' so i will be able to place the barge on the water and then pump in ballast to achieve the correct water line and pump the ballast out prior to lifting it back out of the water.

I live in Newport, South Wales.

Cheers
Jon

A big warm RCMB welcome Cuppa

I think its our "Mutinous dog's" turn to put the kettle on.

I for one am looking forward to seeing photo's and details of your barge build, may I suggest these should ideally be posted initially in the build blog section. Once completed one of us will move it into the relevant section. Hopefully you will have recieved my welcome email and any questions you may have regarding the use of this forum may be either directed via email to any member of the moderator team or posted here, whichever works best for you

regards

Hi John,

Welcome to the club. Sorry I haven't been in touch. I'm up to my armpits in plastic. Very Happy

Would like to come down and see your barge. Doesn't sound too heavy !!

Hello and welcome. I too am in Newport, although not getting a lot of modelling of any sort done at the moment!

Hi Jon

Welcome - you'll like it here in Notmayhemland.

Re lightweight building - Peter (HS93 on here) showed me a fireboat that in part he made from wafer thin fibreglass - it is so unbelievably light. Maybe some parts of your build could be constructed with that? Worth a thought. Also you get a fantastic paint finish.

I have had visitors here for most of the day so hands were tied earlier, but I have just put a new skin over my Hales Spraymaster's transom. That's just to cover my repair of the two old IC exhaust holes. So now I am just looking at it - waiting - waiting - waiting. Patience isn't really my virtue!!! and I used the slow epoxy.........Sleep Sleep Sleep

Re Bus - are you going to use a two wheel shoppers type trolley for the barge then?

Regards Dave
