lifeboat carriage

hi,

this is my lifeboat carriage I have built for my lifeboat THE GORDON WARREN based at rhyl from 1939 - to 1949. it is one of seven built using the Hotchkiss internal cones.







the two big wheels (on left) I have made myself. the two small ones (right) I bought from car boot. the rest I made from scratch, same as the boat i built from scratch.

What size is she,John, and is she powered by your own designed impeller. If so would love to see how you did it, and lets have a build log on both the lifeboat and the carriage.............might get some converts over from mayhem to watch this.

well I have finally got the pictuers resized ready to post.
 first of all I drew a plan of the cart wheel, at 1inch to the foot as that is what the lifeboat was built at, so made it 6 inches dia.





the hub I made from pine, I used my drill saw to make it then marked out all the holes for spokes,





this is the start of the wheels





the spokes I used skewers what are used for kebabs bamboo, but really should have bought some doweling and shaped them  but like all my builds I am working on a shoestring. in the end I am happy  with results and that's all that matters. the rim of the wheel is made from a hard balsa, once they were glued to the rim the wheels where shaped.

My great grand dad was a blacksmith, coach builder and wheelwright all 4' of him I remember watching him heat then shrink the steel tires on this type of wheel.

there is nothing like that going to happen    , no heating and shrinking of metal tyres, I have painted it black to look like metal   . must have been great to see it being done though. I have watched a few on u tube doing just that amazing stuff

this next part is the steering, and how the horses pull the carriage. the bandage for plaster board joins I already had so used this.

 I am now waiting for car boots to start round here looking for some horses to go with it, like that caravan jo had  I have been trying to find it but gave up what size were they.

SUPERB DAVIT......Wish you'd have posted this earlier......would have had a bash at making one for my sailing lifeboat.....brilliant MAN!!!!

They were 1/12th scale David there are quite a few different types of horses in various scales on ebay where I got mine.

sorry david, they both went very quickly to new owners......the Maude pickup......pulling/sailing boat went to kent, and the Motor sailor went to a collector in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland where the boat was first based............went very quickly. never got chance to even sail the motor sailor.
