PostSubject: MV EIGG   MV EIGG EmptySun Aug 18, 2013 5:58 pm

I have decided to separate these two builds as I feel one will detract from the other and so will post pics of each build in their own respective slots.

Now, the Eigg is a small ship of around 80 feet long and can carry around 5 - 6 cars max a time.

she is normal propulsion eg, twin screw with no bow thruster.........easy peasy, and operates on the Oban - Lismore run.

Today I spent time ripping up the car deck as on looking hard at it, it was twisted upwards at the aft end. I have put some inserts in to raise a new deck at that corner and will lay a new deck shortly.

However, the main alteration is at the aft end......the Eigg has a flat transom whereas the little hull I picked up had a rounded one.......so am gluing in some fillets and making a new stern glued onto the old one.....should take some of tomorrow before I can start sanding it down.
I then have the problem of the wrong shaped bulwarks, but this shouldn't be too much of a problem once the stern has been sorted out.

Well, after much personal upset in my life these past couple of months which has left me drained, and with little enthusiasm for anything much except moaning and groaning, I sat down today and thought, "what the hell, get a grip and sort something out............so decided to make a little headway on the smaller of my daughter's two Calmac ferries, the M V Eigg.

so I have chopped and changed the stern and the deck on the little hull I bought from the car boot, straightened it up a little as it had a twist in the stern and blocked it in somewhat to give a more square stern that the Eigg and sisters have..............a wee bit of filler is now needed and will be added tomorrow.

The larger Jupiter will have to wait a couple of months more until the hassles of separation have subsided and I can devote more time to modelling.

Well! I haven't found a pretty blonde yet, but will keep looking, lol

so mind back onto the real job,..................

and today was a day with the filler........first the hull sides to fair them in where I had changed the shape of the hull at the stern, and then fabricating a strange skeg shape to the hull, as shown in a picture of her sister ship Raasay.

Note also the strange "Y" shaped prop shaft supports that will have to be fabricated and soldered up at some stage...........happy days again, lolModify message

cheers matey..this is a bit of a hotch potch and I think I might have been quicker building a hull from scratch, but I suppose it's the "thrill" of the change, especially when my daughter found it on a car boot sale, lol.......

only a tiny bit done recently but have now fitted the false bottom onto the boat. this will allow me to position the twin prop shafts under the counter more easily. it was made from a piece of 15mm ply and has been faired in at the stern, but have now run out of filler so will do the rest, later, and then sanded down. I have no idea as to what paint was used to give it it's Olive Drab green look, but presuming it was brushed enamels I will then sand down to bare wood before sanding sealer and spray paints are used.......it's coming on, and circumstances change next week and so I'll then have a greater time to give it's bigger counterpart, the Jupiter much more time..........yippee.

Well, back to the build.......have finally got over Christmas and a new year and back to a little model making.........Firstly the Eigg has been filled at the bow to fair in the block of wood making the false bottom.

this will need to be sanded down to make a good finish.
