Two Princesses Get Into Trouble Empty
PostSubject: Two Princesses Get Into Trouble   Two Princesses Get Into Trouble EmptyWed Jun 15, 2011 7:48 pm

Hi

I've been surfing around a bit today and I thought I'd post these up. just a couple of Princess's who met difficulties in Alaskan waters. The steamer Princess May ran hard aground on Sentinel Island Alaska in the August of 1910. Built in 1888 in Newcastle England, she measured 249 feet in length. Apparently she grounded within full view of the lighthouse, and was salvaged a month later by the salvage tug Santa Cruz. She remained in service then was scrapped and scuttled off Jamaica in 1930. For a more detailed read see http://perdurabo10.tripod.com/ships/id214.html Amazing to read the grounding hardly damaged her.

Canadian Pacific's Princess Kathleen was 269 ft in length, built 1924 in Clydebank Scotland. She ran aground at Lena Point in Alaska's Lynn Canal at low tide at 03:00 local time on September 7, 1952; her radar was not operational at the time of the grounding. The United States Coast Guard was alerted two hours later and a rescue cutter arrived at 0630. The crew tried to reverse off Lena Point, however as the tide rose, her stern became swamped. All passengers and crew were transferred to lifeboats and ashore as she slid into deeper water and then sank. The wreck of Princess Kathleen sits in approximately 50 ft (15 m)-100 ft (30 m) of water and is accessible to divers, however, tides and currents in the vicinity of Lena Point are strong. The wreck contains approximately 155,000 US gal (590,000 L) of Number 6 fuel oil and in April 2010 crews began operations to salvage the fuel in advance of a possible catastrophic leak. Thank wiki for the info but for a more detailed read see http://themaritimeblog.com/1718/the-sinking-of-the-princess-kathleen

As I say - just posted because I found it interesting and the first picture amazing, and that the most precarious looking vessel survived.

Regards Norseman

Hi

Here's a little coincidence, I'm researching the Kalakala pre chistmas for a build and I found this picture. The Kalakala and Princess Kathleen together. Neat!
