Tugs where I work Empty
PostSubject: Tugs where I work   Tugs where I work EmptySat Oct 29, 2011 5:34 pm

Hi there.

After giving up my business last year, I am now working at International Timber on Newport Docks again (I worked there for several years in the past). I find it fascinating working on the dockside, although I don't work for the docks themselves, I do see all the ships and equipment being used.

We have a pair of tugs that are berthed right by out timber stand, HT Cutlass, and HT Scimitar. I think they are quite attractive tugs, even though they are pretty unkempt.

Here is one of them, with a different tug that has turned up recently, called svitzer

Hope this works, I have not posted images before!

A couple of other shots from around the site.

I would quite like to do a model of one of our tugs, does anyone make a kit or part kit? or even something that could be modified. I thought about MMB's tug, but I think the hull is too different above the waterline.

Very interesting Matt. I've lived in Newport 44 years and haven't set foot on the docks yet !!

Must go down and have a look.

Kenny, That is a shocking admission for a man of your model boating history. Have a chat with your good lady and get down there, sharpish my man!! Laughing

I don't even know the way in. Sad It's always been a guarded gate system as seen from the main road
and you cannot see any evidence of shipping at all.

I will make a concerted try and see what's around.

cheers

It is gated, but I am sure they will let you in if you explain what you want to do.

Must go down. After all, it's where my wood comes from. Laughing

Bit of a rubbish pic, took it this morning and it was a bit miserable, but this is why I like these tugs, the sterns have a really nice shape, vertical rubber strips, and I just find them appealing, I guess it's the simplicity of design I like.

Any problems getting access, I will happily take you down for a mooch, there's not a huge amount down there, but we get interesting bulk cargo ships from time to time. I work by the north dock which is the smallest, but in the main part we get ships that have 6 or 8 deck mounted cranes, no idea of tonnage. You can't obviously go anywhere you like as a lot of it is company births, but there are places where you can go without being in the way.
