Nice one Damien 2thumbsup

Just say, in case you wondered why no progress on my two builds, summer time is always busy doing all sorts of other stuff but come September time I will be back on with them and as you probably know my next build will be the Duchess of Fife Paddle Steamer.

I will be interested how you build the workings especially the paddle wheels Very Happy  good luck Thumbup

Being 1960 plan with polystyrene yet to be thought of the plan calls for every thing in wood the hull is 3mm balsa covered in glass tissue. I printed the instructions off the CD but print is so small i can't read it with reading glasses and magnifying glasses I'll get them printed at 50% bigger lol.

Keel & bulkheads and hull bottom printed keel cut to base line rough the rest, b/heads cut to half of printed centreline rough the rest ready for gluing to the balsa for b/heads and 6mm ply for the keel.
Pic also shows the template for the wheels at 5" I think they'll just squeeze onto my little lathe to cut the rings and at top  RHS  the pattern for the engine beam.

what is the temp like in your part of the continent,,,,,,,,,

remember when i lived in Canberra the temps could get down as cold as -15 on very cold nights....

remember getting in my old MG one morning and reversing down the drive........only to go straight up the garden of a mate across the road and embed myself on his hardy winter plants.......the oil bath in my steering box had frozen and i could't turn the bloody wheel, lol.

Josie Olsen Austra10

with my old beemer in the background, and the bottom picture looking very smug for ourselves.......my mate scotty sat on his ducati 750ss.....we had just put new wheel bearings and brake drums on the mg...........funny thing was i had gone to a bearing place in Canberra asking for bearings for a 1951 mgtd.......nah mate he said..............so went home and took the bearings out and took them down for a match.......another guy measured them ........looked in his book.........ahh yes mate........1972 holden torana.......moral is...........never give up........something will always fit............and they did, lol

I braved the cold shed to get balsa for bulkheads and beam & gallows.
Tools req'd.
Card patterns already made.
Trusty scalpel with No 10 blade.

Josie Olsen Ab16

Assorted Balsa.

Bulkheads ready for assembly.

Josie Olsen DSCF3765_zpsgpk1ogxj

The Beam was very fiddly I decided on balsa as per plan as it's easier to work delicate cuts than polystyrene.
Looking good so far a little and sanding  bit of filler needed prior to a bath in polyester resin to make it solid.

Josie Olsen DSCF3764_zpstar5asru

Worked at my computer desk keyboard's is covered in balsa dust. lol! lol! lol!

Thanks gents.

As I had the 1/4 balsa inside to mark out the keel around 11-30 last night thought what the heck and took to it with an 18mm snap off knife balsa took 5 passes on each section it was so firm the add on stem piece was needed as I added 12mm to depth of the keel in the hope the extra free-board will help her with the constant 100mm+ ripples/waves on Lake Wendouree even my non-paddle models have trouble with it.

Yeah that's it probably photo shopped to death  Perhaps not or they would have deleted evidence of how chocked with weed it is weed is the reason i've gone to paddle boats in the hope paddle don't get clogged with weed like props do.
Ahh pic taken on one of the few days a year with no wind usually they're mid winter we're 450m above sea level basically nothing of substantial height between us and southern ocean with daily wind speed average of 20 to 35kph
Enough of the winge.

The lake hasn't changed much since the 2km rowing course was set up for the 1956 Olympics imagine for a minute 20+kph wind across 1km nth/sth or 2km east/west the waves that occur i'm not kidding

Probably why the only other modeller I've found in the Ballarat area drives 60km to sail with Geelong model boat club.

I've struck a snag bulkhead 2 on the plan is 2.5mm small in width each side, I'll cut some 2.5mm x 3mm balsa across the grain and pin & glue it in place.

I checked and re-checked the card pattern against the plan and the glued in place bulkhead all the same and the inward dip in the outline looks really out of place I seriously doubt it is supposed to be there.

Spring has sprung while warmer 14c spring will be wet we're told I can handle that with a jacket.
Back to the hull and found the frames are fine I'd forced the top rail to the stem when it should have been B1 as B1b to stem is block balsa, the rail fits perfectly.
Some 1/16 strips added to the top of a few of the bulkheads that didn't reach the of the keel board.
All parts for the engine build on hand, and mods to my lathe done it will spin 6" now ready to start the wheels.

Cut the paddle rings on my lathe today a little cleaning up and they'll be fine .

4 pieces marked with compass as per plan centre drilled 4.5mm and reamed fo close fit on 5mm bolt fender washers both sides and nylock nut.

Josie Olsen W4_zps3bgunufy

Josie Olsen W4_zps3bgunufy

A 3mm backing was needed to stop the polystyrene warping.

Josie Olsen W5_zpsxtkolj0g

All turned out nicely only a little trimming needed.

Josie Olsen W6_zps5zhcapj2

This pic shows the same 4 wheel stack in my cordless drill a power drill spins a lot faster.

Rings trimmed, spokes cut and blades/buckets cut to size yesterday
Looking at the plan this morning I was 24-18mm x 20mm buckets short this Guillotine has made cutting polystyrene so easy.

Also started on the wheel centres 2 off 7mm x 21mm brass only broken 2 x 1mm drills so far.

Day off tomorrow Going with my neighbour to watch his son and grandsons at an local car clubs Autocross event.

Progress wheel Jig made.

A 2.5mm hole made with drill press in some excess chip board a section of the 3mm spindle was driven in place with the drill press to assure 90% to the wheels.

The 3 rim parts 2 rings and centre were held in place whilst using a marker to show position of 1mm holes for 1mm stainless pins seen the pics all 4 rims will be exactly the same.

The brass centre will have a 12mm x 1.5mm Dia pin each end at 90 deg's to capture the the centres to avoid any slippage and also drilled and tapped 3mm for grub screws, this first one is not fully machined as yet.

Two months and hardly been in the shed. While building a base for my chrissy present from my son it hit me like a pile of bricks, unfamiliar terminology on the plan and in 50yrs of modelling I have never planked a hull and the the thought of stuffing it up scares the hell out of me!!
Now I know it's bothering me I will overcome it.

I know what you mean Damien, My Eileen needs planking to the hull also and I keep looking at it and thinking, shall I, but avoid it and find something else to do. Like you will do, I will bite the bullet and have a go, we owe it to ourselves to do it 2thumbsup

When I look back and see what I have achieved already in my short time building model boats I am amazed at how resourceful we can be when we try, just look back at what you have done over your time modelling and be amazed, good luck, just have a go Thumbup

Seems I had a larger problem than planking haven't had Claustrophobia for years, I've had to put most of the bits drawers and unused tools away to clear the bench it did the trick back to Josie today on with drama the Deck level planks planks didn't want to bend.
Any tip's for softening without steam. Would hot water do? I guess it'd speed the super glue drying.

Damien.

Damien

I always use hot water not steam. I fill a thermos jug with boiling water and stick the planks in that. Its usually only part of the plank that needs softening. It the whole plank does then you will need a suitable tray to hold them. Using the jug means I can reseal it between planks and that keeps it hotter and saves frequent trips back to the kitchen Laughing
I also use plank 'nippers' if its really hard to get the shape, but they do deform the planks.
